| Why is there still no Gaza ceasefire? Because self-interested world leaders are obstructing it | https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2024/feb/07/gaza-ceasefire-benjamin-netanyahu-joe-biden-hamas-7-october |
[…] “So why no ceasefire? The simple answer is that self-interested, fearful and ineffectual political leaders obstruct it.”
The word ‘ceasefire’ has become, as all things eventually do, somewhat of a political emblem. What is needed is a permanent cessation of orchestrated killing. Otherwise, 30k+ people died for nothing. That being said, a 15 minute ceasefire is 15 minutes that Palestinian kids don’t have to fear death from above and IDF soldiers aren’t running for their lives from ghosts. It’s not happening because, as I’ve said from the start, this is about power, not peace or principles, for all decisionmakers.
The only way to conclude this conflict is for the world to say ‘no’ to Israel’s far-right government, to tell them ‘you will not be allowed to ethnically cleanse Palestine.’ And for the world to tell Hamas ‘yes,’ you will face consequences for October 7th. This will likely need to be achieved by third-party force of arms as a collective police action. No one likes it but that is the answer. And Israel, not America, Europe, nor the Arab world, should pay to rebuild Gaza. Or it will happen again.
Without consequences, without boundaries that are firm, universal, unimpeachable, and not selectively applied, there is nothing to prevent this from happening in the future, and what is not actively prevented will eventually occur. What people can do, they will do. And if you are not going to set the correct precedent within the context of this conflict, there is no point in even talking about it with regard to Russia / Ukraine.
Either rules exist within an international context or they do not. Justice is not blind but she is omnipresent, or she doesn’t exist at all, she is a lie, and this is, as it appears to be, simply a transnational gentleman’s agreement to impose control and facilitate the continued existence and hegemony of familiar blocs of political and economic authority. If power continues to repeat the dubious assumptions and mistakes of the past, it will see the same results, and bring only ruin.
I will condescend to explanation on this topic once, and then leave it to the wind, because unless I have the authority to decide about it I shouldn’t shoulder the burden of responsibility and frankly I’m getting sick of watching the whole travesty of human failure while old rich white people trip over their own dicks making mistakes from history that I’ve spent a lifetime reading about and reflecting upon.
It doesn’t matter what the consensus of the incestuous circle jerk between the corrupt corridors of power in Washington, Europe, and the Arab capitalist fiefdoms, and the Israeli fascist bullshit machine, is. The entire history of Israel has been one of theft of land, resources, and human rights from Palestinians and the subsequent transfer of same to Israelis. The state of Israel is a machine that turns historical collective victimhood into a project of genocide.
It may mean more to some people, especially to some Israelis, but that is irrelevant. People are not what they wish they were, what they hope for, or what they see themselves as. People are what they do. Right now, and since the 1940s, Israelis have been usurpers of land and resources, engaged in a systematic project of genocide against Palestinians. And the United States, Europe, and the Arab bobblehead capitalist custodians of Middle Eastern resources, are willing parties to that.
This puts those states and their citizens in danger, because it means, regardless of what bullshit language is used about ‘terrorism,’ what bullshit laws are passed, what spies are deployed, or what bombs are dropped, ethically, because this is a total war against Palestinians and their allies, any and all reprisals against Israel’s genocidal coalition are morally justified, up to and including the destruction of the state of Israel, because this is a total war of survival vs. annihilation.
The only thing that matters in such a conflict is who is standing at the end of it. And this means that it cannot be contained or controlled as Washington claims to be attempting (while supplying the weapons and political and legal support for it to continue). This conflict will only spread and intensify, because Israel’s goal is the destruction of the Palestinians as a cohesive ethnic and political group. Israel wants the land and it can’t have it if there are angry people living there.
The situation with UNRWA is a cynical play by Israel to facilitate this goal. First, where is the evidence that any wrongdoing took place? Second, so what if it did? Israel is engaged in a genocidal project by its very continued existence. Any actions taken against it have some level of moral justification. Third, discontinuing the only aid channel to an entire population of people over the crimes of a dozen is collective punishment, another supposed international crime.
All of these factors are part of a strategy to demonstrate the resolve of Israel and the West to be in control. It has nothing to do with a particular group or crime and is not about justice or peace. It is about hegemony, ideological and practical. Israel and the West are run by people who are so accustomed to privilege and entitlement that they believe that if they hurt people enough, and lie to people enough, those people will eventually obey.
History teaches us that this is not the case. If you continue down this path it will be a third world war. And you will deserve whatever suffering, destruction, death, and loss of influence you accumulate in your pursuit or abetment of genocide. It is not your place. Those are not your humans. You have violated your own rules and customs to try to make it otherwise. That will have a cost. The cost will be high. The world is better off without the people facilitating or encouraging it. End.
