What those obsessed with the construction of perfect sociopolitical abstractions fail to grasp is that humans are hardwired to try and murder those who either aren’t like them, or who group together in a way that they do not control. It is an evolutionary defense mechanism. How overtly it is acted upon is dependent upon the social rank of the actor. Ridicule, microaggression, or social exclusion for humble followers, punishment, harm, or murder for alphas (soldiers, police, politicians, ghosts).
Now, it’s complicated because there is also a social imperative toward cooperation, because warm bodies are the ultimate resource in a world of animals and harsh challenges. There is also a sexual component (he who breeds decides and to challenge the social order is to challenge for control of sexual partners and resources). Thus, humans are always caught in a paradoxical struggle between destruction of opponents and acquiring enough social permission to do that.
Anyway, this is why your politics are supposedly ‘polarized’ and why people, particularly alphas (even those not officially recognized and don’t think you’re not one just because you’re a girl or an indigenous or some celebrated group on social media… politics or group history don’t factor into it, I’m talking about people who aren’t followers, here) can’t seem to get along with anyone. We aren’t meant to. We are meant to alter the world to taste through violence. That’s evolution.
Of course, that’s not much fun and it leads to great sadness and suffering. Democracy and capitalism were our collective ways of fencing in that imperative to murder what is other and to take what he, she, or they have for ourselves. But those are failing because there is generational rot and decay within the systems themselves, and the higher you go the worse the smell and the weaker the actors, the weak are presumed to be strong because they are made strong by the rules, but it is an illusion.
These systems were never meant to be democratic and they were never meant to be fair. They were meant to disguise our fundamental natures (murderous, jealous, overly-acquisitive liars) in order to create a kind of sociopolitical agriculture of sacrifice, whereby weakening lineages of chiefs and kings could maintain family or clan control over resources and over others by rigging the game. But informational proliferation and climate change will lead to a reset. And the killing will begin anew.
Now, my solution to this quagmire was to establish a dominant belief structure around what I called the integrity of life (the even-handed physical protection of living things and systems, the prohibition on undue antagonism of same, and the imperative to protect quality of life for all living things wherever possible). And, to ensure its practical success, this was to be a peaceful imperative but not a pacifistic one. In other words, respect existence or get a collective, overwhelming beatdown.
Saying it out loud was my social crime, for this system challenges everything and socially and materially enriches very few. It gets no politicians elected. It gets no book deals or radio interviews for leftists. It is antithetical to capitalism and even to the concept of excessive wealth itself. It was seen as too idealistic or unworkable by the very people it would help the most, and as too threatening to almost everything that systemically exists today. Especially useless to nepo babies 🙂
But that’s the only way I see out of all of us eventually murdering one another, on a global scale. You all need to make your democracies actual, real democracies, and you need to make room for those who want to live in more egalitarian or traditional ways. You need to exorcise right wing or arbitrarily authoritarian ideologies, systems, groups, and polities from the social fabric. You need to end capitalism and start teaching your children to respect all life.
You might not like how all of this sounds. I don’t blame you. It’s easier to pretend that the world, and the people in it, are governed by some code of justice that the universe is keeping hidden away for us to find. But it’s not so. The only rules, the only reality, are the ones we collectively make. There’s nothing more. And the psychopaths who rule you only hide this foundational brutality so long as there is some benefit to it for them. That benefit is evaporating. Change things or prepare.
