All of the right-wing (both fascist or fascist-adjacent and neoliberal) talk about ‘destroying’ terrorists or terrorism should alarm you now as much as it did others in the past. What is actually being described is extra-judicial murder by the state, you see, for people who exist outside of everyday legal structures and rule sets. Now, I don’t have a problem with this because, frankly, I don’t put much stock in laws or legal codes. If someone’s a murderous asshole, do as you like. WTF do I care?
I mean, in a state of nature (which we’re all in), without a god or overarching moral arbiter (of which there is none, unless you count me :), people do as they have the power to do. That is the code the murderers chose to live by, so my thinking is you can’t cry to the heavens when it lands back in your lap, regardless of what the other evildoers did. It’s just people getting revenge on people for getting revenge on people and on and on. Humans repeatedly pretending that it’s ever settled.
But what should alarm you about it is the mindset and the rule set of the current rulers of the global order themselves. What they are excitedly exclaiming should be done to the ‘terrorists,’ the other, the out-group, is exactly what they would do to the people they don’t like within their own borders if they had the opportunity. It’s what they have done and are doing to unarmed, non-militant, ‘innocent’ populations over which they have control.
All right-wing ideologies, including every one that currently governs states around the world, including ‘liberalism,’ depend on the assumption that some people are expendable, and that the rule systems they enshrine in their constitutions or religions or ideologies or economies determine this according to some rational or moral absolutes (when, in actuality, the winners and losers are mostly determined by birth, luck, and proximity to wealth, power, and privilege).
But, you don’t need to be a ‘terrorist’ to find yourself institutionally murdered. Prisoners, migrants, the homeless, the poor, queer people, trans people, nonbinary people, people of color, indigenous populations, the disabled, neurodivergent people, or people that governments, corporations, or oligarchs simply do not like are all legitimate targets. All that is required is some legal basis for their disregard, and generally power doesn’t even bother with that.
We could debate forever about what ‘terrorism’ is and about the history and environments that create it and we could all write fancy papers and get grants and work for rich people who need codified, cover-thy-ass reasoning for murdering people abroad, but that’s not the point. The point is, if the world was correct, if it worked on behalf of all people, equally, the way that it should, this would not be an issue. Militant behavior, aggression, are symptoms of a broken system.
The whole world will be walled gardens and walled ghettos if you let them get away with it. And it’s a coin flip as to which neighborhood you or your children end up in. Be wary of the formal establishment of groups of disposable lives. What can be done to them can, and will, be eventually done to you.
