The truth is that we don’t really believe in the power of our governments or legal systems to bring us justice. If we did, all of our stories would be courtroom or parliamentary dramas. Instead, the heroes in our fiction mostly carry icons, tomes, and weapons, and nearly to the individual they are almost always working around authority and outside of the rules to achieve the good. We are nearly all of us still prisoners to feudalism and paupers in poverty of any real sociopolitical imagination.
