No, let me break this down for you guys.
Had the coup been successful (had the Capitol Police lost control of that building), the fascists would have murdered their perceived enemies in Congress, in a carnival atmosphere of televised violence.
There would have been subsequent, nearly immediate, copycat sieges in statehouses across the country, with similar results.
That night, or the next morning, fascists would have spread out into the surrounding communities across the nation. They would have gone building to building, house to house, dragging those they deem inferior into the street and executing them, and streaming that live on the internet.
Shortly thereafter, Trump would declare a national emergency and invoke martial law, to ‘restore order,’ which would be coordinated by his political cronies in the Pentagon. At this point, fascist rule would be nearly unshakable, as the military has stated it will not intervene in political affairs.
The fascist wing of the Republican Party, which is nearly all of it, at this point, is not going to impose any accountability for this. They supported it. They called for it. They are not going to convict Trump. They are buying time and hoping people will forget. They are going to do everything in their power to disrupt investigative efforts targeted at Republicans in Congress and conspirators within the executive branch. We have a big problem, here. And if the center loses resolve then this will all happen again, with the aforementioned results, because that is exactly what these people fantasize about.
This is why antifascists say and do the things we do. The endgame of the fascist, whether they claim that title or hide behind some twisted, cult-version of reactionary conservatism, is to murder you, and to take joy in the public spectacle of the act.
There can be no compromise with that. There must be accountability, hopefully through the legal and democratic process, but accountability regardless.
